Selecting A System

When calculating your electrical needs, it is important to first consider the role of conservation and efficiency. The use of efficient lighting, pumps, and appliances in addition to substituting non-electric sources of energy for space and water heating, can reduce your kilowatt-hour consumption by up to 75%. Starter Home System

The starter home system is appropriate for seasonal residences and small homes. It includes a 920-watt solar array, charge controller, 16 kW battery bank, inverter and all necessary components. Operating voltage is 48 volts DC and includes a 2.5 kW pure sine wave inverter that can provide 120 volt AC power for kitchen and bathroom appliances, computer, stereo, TV, lighting, water pumping, etc. For winter time usage or periods of high demand, the system is configured with a remote start, a propane-fired generator to supplement the PV. This system can be ordered with up to sixteen modules and batteries.

Residential Power System

off-grid residence summit njThis is a larger version of the starter home system, suitable for year-round homes. This system includes an 1840 watt solar array and a 4 kW pure sine-wave inverter to provide utility-grade power. The inverter can power large AC loads including deep well pumps and the battery bank is large enough to power homes for many days without sun. This package typically includes a remote start, an LPG-fired generator that can power the inverter’s 60-amp built-in battery charger while powering the house. As with all Solar Works systems, individual components can be customized to meet your needs.

Commercial Power System

It includes a 2.76 kW solar array, and two synchronized Xantrex pure sine-wave (SW) inverters to provide 240V utility-grade power for large homes or small businesses. The standard 24 unit 350 amp-hour battery bank is capable of storing 35 kWh of electricity. This system can be configured for 3 phase service and can be converted to a utility-interactive system if power is made available in the future.

How Off-Grid Solar Works

During sunlight hours the photovoltaic panels generate DC electricity. This electricity is regulated by the PV charge controller and distributed to the inverter(s) or stored in the battery bank. At night and during cloudy periods, the energy stored in the batteries is used to power household loads. The inverter draws DC power from the battery or PV array and converts it to 120 volts AC, which is distributed to the household AC loads through a standard load center with circuit breakers. DC power is also available for powering special high-efficiency equipment such as pumps, lighting or Sunfrost refrigerators.

Many of our off-grid photovoltaic systems are “hybrid” systems that use a generator to supplement the output of the PV array. When the inverter senses low battery state-of-charge, it automatically starts the generator, transfers household loads and turns itself into a battery charger. When batteries are charged, the inverter turns the generator off and returns to its normal mode.

Warranties

Solar-Works.Com warranties its PV systems to operate as specified and to be free of defects for a period of one year from the date of commissioning. This warranty is contingent upon system owner following the prescribed operating procedures outlined in the System Manual. During this period of time, Solar-Works.Com will repair or replace, at its discretion, any defective component free of charge. After the first year, components are covered by their respective manufacturer’s warranty. These are as follows:

  • PV Modules – limited 20-year warranty
  • Inverter – limited 2-year warranty
  • Generator – limited 1-year warranty

After the initial one-year warranty period, Solar Works will repair or replace, at its discretion, any warrantied component, charging only for the labor to remove and reinstall it.

In June of 1997, President Clinton announced the Million Solar Roofs Initiative. The goal of the Initiative is to install solar energy systems on one million buildings by 2010.
